Where is Grand Marais, MN?
Grand Marais, MN, is two hours north of Duluth, MN, up “Scenic 61” and nearly three hours south of Grand Portage and the US/Canadian Border. We co-authored on a book about Scenic Drives in the Midwest and we included this stretch in the Minnesota chapter. You can purchase an autographed copy here or on Amazon.
Driving Highway 61 to Grand Marais is arguably the most scenic drive in Minnesota. With views of Lake Superior and adorable little towns peppered along the way, your trip to this part of the North Shore will capture a piece of your heart.
We believe the Highway 61 North Shore drive should be done leisurely, and time should be allowed for pulling off when you spot a waterfall or see exits for Gooseberry Falls State Park or Split Rock Lighthouse State Park.

Hungry Hippie Tacos

One of our favorite places to grab a bite to eat in Grand Marais is Hungry Hippie Tacos. The portions are enormous, so this is a great value, and the food is tasty! Win-Win!
They’re proud of their “northern taco” and puffy homemade taco shells. The easiest dish to order here is the Idaho Love Northern Taco, which includes garlic-roasted potatoes, ranchero beans (pinto beans with southwest spices), sweet corn salsa, and kale chimichurri.
We also ordered a Burrito, a large tortilla stuffed with rice and rancher beans (omit the cheddar), and substituted the corn salsa.
We came here hangry and also ordered hot taters and dip. This was practically a meal by itself.
It was all delicious, and we left stuffed. They also have a Duluth location, which we have not tried yet.

Though we’ve passed by this food truck, it’s always been between meals, so we’ve never had a chance to eat here.
Luckily, our niece, Morgan, shared this picture she took of her “Grand Marais Must-Eat” watermelon poke bowl. Morgan mentioned that she loved all the vegan options from the shakes, smoothies, and drinks menu and that they offer oat milk. We even noticed a vegan breakfast burrito on the menu!

Cook County Whole Foods Co-Op
20 East First St, Grand Marais, MN 55604

When all else fails, you know you can stop at a Co-Op to find some vegan options. We found some premade wraps during our visits to Cook County Co-Op. Note the pre-made options rotate daily. You can always grab some hummus and veggies or crackers to stop on during your trip to Grand Marais.
In addition to your typical Co-Op shopping aisles, they also work with local vendors for some of their foods. Stop in to get locally sourced bread, coffee, wild rice, etc. This would be an excellent spot for some local foodie souvenirs.
