In our opinion, TRNP is one of the most underrated National Parks, and Teddy’s commitment to conservation is the reason we can enjoy any of the National Parks in the United States.

We mentioned that Medora is just a quick exit off I-94. There is also a rest stop within TRNP. Many people passing through think they’ve “seen” the park by stopping. This is far from the truth, but think of this scenic overlook as an appetizer for the other units of the National Park.
A perfect example of why you should always get off the Highway and see what’s out there!

Summer
Visiting from May to September offers the fullest Medora experience, including:

- Warm weather for exploring Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Spring and Fall
Personally, these shoulder-season months are our favorite time to travel anywhere, with fewer crowds and cooler temperatures.
Wildlife in the Badlands can be excellent at this time as well.
If you want to take in experiences outside of TRNP, which is open year-round, you’ll want to check what is open during these months so you can plan the perfect trip to Medora, North Dakota.
Our speculation is that with the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library on July 4, 2026, more traffic will prompt some attractions to be open more during these months.

We said above that we think three days is the perfect amount of time. We think three days allows you to take in the most amount of attractions. Here’s what we recommend adding to the third day to plan the perfect trip to Medora, North Dakota. There are three units of the national park, and you should definitely check it out.
- Get up early for a sunrise view of TRNP
- Drive to the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, approximately 1.5 hours north of Medora. This will be a different experience
