The History of the Mineral Point Hotel Building
Part of Mineral Point’s charm is its many historical buildings. Over 500 are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and Mineral Point was the first city in Wisconsin to be placed on the list.
The building that is now Mineral Point Hotel was initially built in 1857 and has a storied past. It began as the Lanyon Building – a steam-powered flour mill. Then, it became Tom Collin’s Grocery, Collins & Kane Grocers, and Peter’s Grocery. After that, Mineral Point Steam Laundry, Staber’s Appliance, Rupp’s Appliance, Russell Dairy, Knudson Motor Service, and Walrack Motors. Phew!
In 2018, proprietors John & Lisa Spady purchased and thoroughly renovated the building that is now Mineral Point Hotel. It is stunning, and you won’t believe the gorgeous details.

It’s All in the Details
The attention to detail at Mineral Point Hotel is stunning, and the black-and-white Parisian theme is impressive. You’ll enjoy walking around and looking at all the gorgeous details as the sound of light jazz softly plays in the background.
I could not get over all the beautiful details. It all made sense when I read after my visit that the owner, John Spady, had an illustrious career in film and television.
Based in New York, John specialized in and was known for scouting the perfect location for period pieces on acclaimed shows like Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men. Working on Boardwalk Empire, an HBO show based in the prohibition eras of the 1920s and 1930s, left an impression on John that influenced his design theme for Hotel Mineral Point.
Mineral Point Hotel has modern amenities in a setting that evokes the atmosphere of early 20th-century Paris.
Marriott vs. Local Hotels
As Marriott loyalists, we’ve had some incredible and luxurious hotel stays. This was a pretty great stay. However, even luxurious hotel stays can still be lacking in certain areas. Since we’re using points for our reservations, we’ll most likely always choose free over a unique stay. We often miss out on unique local lodging experiences like Mineral Point Hotel.
Mineral Point Hotel is a Boutique Hotel Experience
Hotel Mineral Point checks all the boxes of a boutique hotel: attentive staff, a small, intimate hotel with unique artwork and architectural details.
My stay at Mineral Point Hotel was the perfect example of what we miss out on when staying at a chain hotel.
My room was unique, clean, spacious, light, and airy. It had everything I needed for a two-night stay and was big enough not to feel cramped. And it felt like home rather than a cookie-cutter hotel room.
What I loved about Mineral Point Hotel
Waking up to the smell of GOOD coffee. There’s nothing more disappointing than a warm cup of hotel coffee when staying in a chain.
My bedroom had a ceiling fan! This may have been my favorite in-room feature.
Great bathroom towels. I don’t know which is worse in a chain hotel: the coffee or the flat, bleached, scratchy towels. The towels in my room were so lovely and fluffy without the smell of chlorinated laundry detergent.
My room had a small deck that overlooked the wooded backyard. It was quiet and serene. I also appreciated having a screen door to prop open while I worked at the table.
The free and fast Wi-Fi helped me finish some work at the table in my room. If Dusty had been along on this trip, we could have worked at the table, as there were two chairs. That’s another complaint about hotel chains—there is only ever one desk chair, which we find annoying.
The patio was adorable and welcoming. The black-and-white umbrellas over the tables are tucked between limestone buildings, creating a calm and cozy setting.
The clawfoot tub was a beauty, and I appreciated the shower option.
The bed was so comfortable, and I slept soundly both nights.
I loved the soft French jazz music and the twinkling lights in the evenings. Beer and cocktails are available for purchase in the lobby. The patio is the perfect way to unwind after exploring historic Mineral Point. I wished I had enjoyed the patio more, but there were many fun things to do during my stay at Mineral Point. That’s a good problem to have.

Another thing that stood out is how much the owners support the other local businesses in Mineral Point. John and Lisa own another property in town, the historic Jail Alley Inn, so if he’s not at Mineral Point Hotel during your check-in, you’ll
Light snacks are available in the lobby for hotel guests. Some local baked goods, bananas, a microwave, and a toaster were available during my stay.
If you’re used to staying in chain hotels, like we are, a stay at Mineral Point Hotel will make you consider staying in local boutique hotels.
My stay at Mineral Point Hotel reminded me of when Dusty and I lived and worked at a Bed & Breakfast in college. It has that cozy, warm feeling of a bed and breakfast that is a far cry from hotel chains. It’s an entirely different experience that I really missed. A stay at Mineral Point Hotel is truly a unique and enjoyable stay.
