A Simple Breakfast for Eating Healthy on Road Trips

When we started eating Whole-Food, Plant-Based (WFPB) we knew we had to find our own way of eating healthy on road trips. discovered that eating hotel breakfasts that include eggs, sausage, or bacon, and hotel waffles no longer fit into our preferred way of eating. We were happy to discover that it’s entirely possible, and with a little preparation, to continue eating healthy on road trips. Preparation is definitely the key to eating healthy on the road.

Tips for Eating Healthy on Road Trips

With a little preparation, it’s easy to continue eating healthy on road trips. If you want to stay WFPB and start your day with a quick and healthy breakfast, consider packing these items to set yourself up for success.

Food Prep Before The Trip

  • A cooler that will fit your perishable items
  • Prepare your cereal in small baggies
  • Cutting board
  • Paring knife
  • Utensils
  • Almond Milk
  • Fruit

Here’s the cereal we use for our Breakfast Bowls: Uncle Sam Cereal Wheat , Nuts , Steel ut Oats , Ground Flax , Chia Seed . We pre-make the cereal during our week at home. We add a small amount of each cereal into the bag. Add as little or as much- whatever your appetite is for cereal.  It’s so easy to open a baggie of cereal and add fresh fruit and almond milk!

Pack two plastic bowls you’ll eat out of when you’re taking pre-packed cereal on the road. We pack two bowls (one for each of us) and put the cereal bags right into the bowls. Easy storage! Throw a couple of extra whole-grain cereals in, and then you can count on having a healthy snack if needed!

Once you’ve arrived at your destination

Unpack your cereal and toppings once you get to the hotel. In most cases, a hotel will have a small refrigerator. We’ve even stayed at hotels where we could request a small refrigerator to be brought to our room. Don’t hesitate to call the front desk to request what you need for your room to keep eating healthy on road trips. The worst case is that you have to keep your almond milk and fruit in your cooler. Keep it cool by using hotel ice.

Eating Healthy On Road Trips

We’ve found there really is no excuse for not eating healthy on road trips. The hotel waffles that Kelly used to “treat yo-self” with weren’t really a treat. They may have tasted fantastic, but a breakfast loaded with sugar and no nutrients is no way to start a day of exploration.

Pro Tip: Go to the breakfast area in the morning and grab a few bananas to add to your healthy cereal for your breakfast!

I love your cereal idea! Usually I fly versus drive, so my BYO breakfast options need to be more compact/shelf stable. I usually bring protein bars and apples (or buy some fruit at my destination if that will be convenient). My husband, on the other hand, is all about the hotel waffles…

So smart to bring something that will work (flying). Trust us, we’ve had our fair share of hotel waffles.!!
